Game description from the publisher:
Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) is a board game in which one player takes on the role of the treacherous overlord, and up to four other players take on the roles of courageous heroes. During each game, the heroes embark on quests and venture into dangerous caves, ancient ruins, dark dungeons, and cursed forests to battle monsters, earn riches, and attempt to stop the overlord from carrying out his vile plot.
With danger lurking in every shadow, combat is a necessity. For such times, Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) uses a unique dice-based system. Players build their dice pools according to their character’s abilities and weapons, and each die in the pool contributes to an attack in different ways. Surges, special symbols that appear on most dice, also let you trigger special effects to make the most of your attacks. And with the horrors awaiting you beneath the surface, you’ll need every advantage you can take…
Featuring double-sided modular board pieces, countless hero and skill combinations, and an immersive story-driven campaign, Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) transports heroes to a vibrant fantasy realm where they must stand together against an ancient evil.
Compared to the first edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark, this game features:
Simpler rules for determining line of sight
Faster setup of each encounter
Defense dice to mitigate the tendency to "math out" attacks
Shorter quests with plenty of natural stopping points
Cards that list necessary statistics, conditions, and effects
A new mechanism for controlling the overlord powers
Enhanced hero selection and creation process
Experience system to allow for hero growth and development
Out-of-the-box campaign system

Love that it shortens the scenarios into roughly hour or so lengths vs. the hours it took to get through them in 1st edition. The app is also a great way to play, which is how I play with my son.

Descent is one of the best miniature games I have ever played, where a group of players band up against the Overlord player which controls some cool creatures like dragons etc. The theme is great, the miniatures are AWESOME and the fact that you have different scenarios, different skills to choose from, different items, different characters, different Overlord cards etc. offers you a great deal of variety. Your characters do not have a lot of health, and a decent hit could consume half of your hit points in an instance. This creates tension, you never know you will live to see the next turn (well technically, you don't die but are just knocked down). However, this brings along that combat can feel really swingy at times, and also too luck-based. One turn you are winning without question, the other you feel like crying and giving up. Although I like games with some mechanism to deal with a runaway leader problem, I think they overdid it with this one. Another problem is the set-up, which could take a long time. The disadvantages do not outweigh the advantages, but I can imagine people being put off by this. Still a wonderful game. I sold the game because the theme of Imperial Assault appeals to me more. Theme (artwork/story/...) 1.75/2 Gameplay (smooth play/player interaction/strategy&tactics/depth) 4/5 Fun factor (can you afford a smile during play?) 2.5/3

Correct play for the Overlord seemed like it caused the game to drag on. Would like to try with Road to Legend app.
