At least one lieutenant pack is necessary for any Overlord playing Descent. The game is more than a bit unbalanced in favor of the heroes and these provide more options for the Overlord that might give him a bit of a fighting chance. These lieutenant packs contain a deck of cards, tokens, and a plastic miniature. The deck of cards provides the Overlord with some additional options by spending tokens that he earns through adventures. This eventually swings back in the favor of the heroes a little bit because after spending these tokens they are given to the heroes to use for small bonuses. An Overlord can only use one lieutenant pack per campaign so I haven't used them all but have bought many due to the awesome plastic miniature to replace the cardboard token representing most of the villains in the game. One day I plan to paint them all but that is more of a pipe dream than attainable goal...

FFG: Lookit! We made pretty figures to replace your stupid little tokens. Me: Really? Those look great... but I don't really want to spend the money... FFG: There's a set of cards that changes the Overlord's tactics and make things more interesting. Me: ...crap... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

No reason to ever play without the miniatures once you have them. They are much nicer than using the lieutenant tokens. This, I think, is the worst looking mini out of the base game lieutenant packs. First mini I ever painted with some help from the guy who taught me to paint. This is a crappy sculpt but her turned out OK, I guess. Still need to try out the new cards and tokens.
