In the near future, the mega-corporations of the military-industrial complex have invested trillions developing cybernetically enhanced clone soldiers for off-world exploration. Seeking to build robust teams for future missions — and more importantly, to land lucrative government contracts — they have created special training islands. On these islands, they are able to simulate all of the deadly conditions their soldiers may face on remote planets.
To fund these expensive programs and the military-grade innovations built into their test subjects, the arms manufacturers have teamed up with media moguls to create and promote broadcast competitions live from the island’s training grounds. Thus was born “RELOAD”, the biggest TV show on the planet, with the most charismatic and capable subjects competing in front of millions of avid viewers to win fame for themselves and fortunes for their creators.
In Reload, you get to engage in this battle-royale experience thanks to an innovative action dice system that offers fast-paced play and the freedom to explore the island while fighting for fame.

I read about this game and got interested, so I contacted Kolossal Games and they gave me and my friends the opportunity to play the prototype on Tabletopia. It's definitely not meant for digital playing, but we still had such a blast! It's the first battle royale like game that really intrigued me, because it replaces player elimination with the fame track (basically scoring points), which makes it a tense race until the end with variants of ways to succeed. It has a lot of dice but much less dice rolling then you think. Your actions in your turn determine the value of most of your dice, which is such a neat way to balance the game and reduce the randomness. Using rock paper scissors to determine the result of a trap is a mechanic I haven't seen yet and that adds so much to the game. We weren't so happy with the current implementation of the achievements/special missions but it sounded like the still working on this one. Of course, a battle royale board game comes always short regarding the "actioness" compared to a shooter computer game. Also, typical for this game genre, you can't really build up a long-term strategy, instead you have to adapt your tactic to the current situation each term. For me personally (as I usually like very heavy games), I can imagine that the base game alone will feel too simple quite fast. But as Kolossal Games explained, there will be different play modes and the Kickstarter will offer some expansion that will bring more depth. So I definitely see myself bring this game to the table quite often. We will give the prototype a few more rounds and maybe I will adapt my rating based on it. But for now, I can’t wait to back this game. I really can’t see how you can get out more of a battle royale board game.

I can not stress enough how much a poor rulebook shoots this game in the foot. This is a fun and straight-forward concept that gets bogged down in unclear processes and unintuitive design decisions that prevent it from ever really clicking.

Played one game with 3 players for the first time today and it was a beast to learn. I don't know if it's because there's no good videos of teaching it online or the rulebook is just not written well... We made it through a game and it was fun. However, reading through the rulebook now I see we made a lot of mistakes. I definitely felt like the game was a bit too short though, we essentially only get 6 turns each in a 3 player game and it's only going to be 5 each in a 4 player game... Can't wait to play it again with 4. There are a lot of components, but hopefully the box insert will cut down on setup since we can just keep most components in the slots next time. I think once you get 4 players who know what they're doing together for this, it will shine. I'll adjust my rating later.
