This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.

medium heavy winsome game. It's a pity that the interest cubes are in the same color as the railroad cubes. This seems to be better done in the capstone edition. But for the rest a decent game with an exact time of 60'.

This did not work for our group of three, which surprised me because I liked my one play of Ride the Rails. Moves were mainly obvious: add rails in companies in which you own shares. Auctions for shares liven things up a bit, but then it’s back to more laying rails, with occasional dividend payouts. Repeatedly working out the payments was a grind. There seemed to be so little to this game. One player remarked that it was probably designed back in the early days of modern board gaming and was surprised to find how relatively recent it was. After we finished I suggested we play again, not because I’d enjoyed it but because I was sure we must be missing something, but the other players were so underwhelmed that we decided to play something else. The art has been widely praised and while it is evocative, it is limited to the box cover, there is no other art. The board is functional blandness.

The first in the series of cube rail games by Capstone is a really nice one. Not at the level of Chicago Express or American Rails for me but it is an interesting one. I didn't like the fixed prices for the stocks and that they are in such a limited number and the also the mechanic of paying via what three cubes are out. It's a decent game, especially for non gamers.
