In the base game, black cubes - out of the bag - act like a buffer to your own coloured cubes being pulled. The buffer gives you time to get your deck building engine moving. The expansion makes black cubes activate schemes (which are mostly bad things that happen). There are some interesting and fun-sounding ideas in this expansion which definitely make the game harder. While I like the expansion, it adds complexity in there is another thing I have to think about. It's not a deterrent to playing the expansion because its not major complexity added. I just enjoyed the simplicity of black cubes being a buffer. While I will always play with the new cards, I may not always use the schemes - AND the rules in the expansion make room for this type of play! So while I like the expansion, it is not a necessity to enjoying Clank! In! Space! However, if you want more module tiles, get the expansion. More variability is a welcomed addition.

This adds more cards, one mechanic of placing pulled Black cubes and purchasing them for card benefits, and a couple more tiles to use. Expansion is very easy to add and the extra danger makes the game more difficult to survive. I'll have this expansion in all future plays.

A brilliant idea with decent execution. I've played both of the Category 1 schemes now, each with just two players. Both games were definitely fun, but the schemes were more of a minor annoyance than anything. With experienced players, I'd suggest using Category 2-3, and leaving schemes out altogether with brand new players.
