Played for the first time with 3 players and the special extension, which offers an interesting but different game. The game is good and I enjoy playing it. The downside for me is the iconography, which isn't really intuitive. I've played 6 games in the last 3 months and I still need to refer to the game aids/rules to understand the icons. What saves me in the end is having a partner who understands them better than I do :)

Provisional rating, I need to try it coop and solo and with 4 ... Like what I see so far, very thinky with quite a learning curve, I could see a new player getting crushed in about 3 turns when you know what you are doing. If you don’t like direct interaction and area control you're going to hate this. Yes you can upgrade your spirit and your cards but really this is about grabbing areas and exploiting opportunities, and trying to stop your opponent(s) doing the same. Bags of replayability and I’m sure it shines once you get the iconography and know all the emotion cards. Keen to play again. ** Update - still loving it, upped my rating to 9. Yet to play with balance, but I really like this - once you get over the learning curve, it can be brutal once you know what you are doing, on your turn do you stop your opponents or further your goals, or ideally both. You can't take a sub optimal action and not expect to suffer for it. Need to try coop and solo!

A well designed, mechanically sound game that does absolutely nothing for me. Suffers from a tough on-ramp, falling into the same trap that many Eklund games do by being excessively elaborate with terminology, but then compounds it by making poor choices about communication to the player. The game vomits symbology at the player, without providing easy references and guides. The pursuit of making the game language independent has meant that it sacrifices too much usability. The core gameplay isn't actually that challenging, but there are a lot of interlocking pieces. The biggest issue I have, once you pass the learning hurdle, is that the game is incredibly constraining, yet you can't do much in the way of planning when it isn't your turn... and downtime can be long. If the whole group wants to play it, I wouldn't protest, but it's not a strong player in the waters in swims in.
