This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Feel like this is the last step in a system designed to get players into a worker placement frame of mind. Essentially workers go onto board to either get, or trade up goods which then used to buy cards to gain points etc. QUite a complex game even though it is light for a worker placement game.

This small engine-building, trading, worker placement game is made even better by the fact that it is a race game. The worker placement aspect of it is the weakest part (especially with the use of people rather than time units specifically since that is what is more precisely being bid, and it isn’t clear what your role is that you’d have lots of men..?) and especially since there isn’t much new there, except of course that the workers are more straightforwardly a currency that is also bid with. The small worker pieces are a bit fiddly, especially since they are handled so often in great numbers whenever you clear the board. Where Spice Road I thought nailed the theme, this loses a little by adding more stuff on top that could be pared back to the more abstract representation of what is actually being exchanged.

[microbadge=34746] I think I prefer the elegant simplicity of Century: Spice Road, and also the colonial theme with this one makes me feel really uneasy - more Native Americans died during the invasion of North America than did Jews in the Holocaust.
