People often compare this to Splendor, and I prefer this one. It flows, little down time, great fun.

The more I think about Spice Road the more it bugs me. Continuously upgrading the cubes using the same few cards in your deck and the only combo you can build from them. There's a more than likely chance that the row of new cards in the shop are so useless that the whole game is played with only a few of them bought. So it becomes a game of who got the only worthy advanced cards to their hand and who happens to have the combo needed to attain the victory points. It's also clear around halfway through if you're going to win or not. The person ending the game ends up with more point cards than the rest so it's very likely that player will also win and thus the points on the cards are almost secondary turning the game into a race. Although not a bad game, I actively avoid it in all its incarnations. The only thing Spice Road has going on for it is the card play similar to Concordia. I'd like to see it used in better games.

2021/04/09 - 4 plays Rating as the whole Century system (6->8) 2017/07/07 - 2 players - 1 p Century SR is a quick gateway card game of resource conversion and engine building that sports some interesting characteristics : - there is deckbuilding, but no shuffling -> fast and neat! - no handsize limit -> reduces AP, helping the game fly The game plays well at 2p, and results tight despite taking different strategies. The cards have wonderful illustrations, even though theme takes a back seat as soon as you ref up your engine to convert those cubes into more cubes in order to harvest points for the win! It's great worknight game with super simple rules that you can play 2-5 with kids and adults in under one hour: a very sought after type of games!
