Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Really enjoyed this one. I didn't find much advantage to using the black market on my first play through but the rest of the worker locations felt pretty important. The components you get for the price is excellent. Love how fast the turns are, how many workers you get, and the capturing mechanic. Looking forward to playing more in the series.

Found the game to be slightly dull. The concept of prison and capturing/releasing workers didn't work well for me, I fould it even a bit irritating. Not my cup of tea.

This is often compared to Raiders of the North Sea, and while the designer is the same, the gameplay is certainly different. Some would say that Architects is superior, and in some ways it is; and in others, not so much. Both games are really an efficiency race. Architects has greater depth of play; there is more to to on a given turn in Architects. There is a bit more interest in the "honor" track that somewhat dictates the strategy you might take. Architects also offers some variable starting player abilities/starting setup. Raiders offers randomized raiding locations. One aspect I noticed was a drop in component quality compared to Raiders; flimsier card stock, no metal coins. Architects feels like it takes longer to play, even though the actual length of play is comparable. Raiders of the North Sea by comparison just feels like it hums. In short, I tend to prefer Raiders while my wife prefers Architects. I feel that Raiders is the easier of the two to play, and would certainly suggest it as a solid start for a worker placement game, with Architects being a solid follow up.
