Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.
Got this one bundled (accidentally, I think) with Raiders of the North Sea when I bought it from the Amazon Warehouse. It was missing one Valkyrie token (which I managed to simulate by trimming out a broken meeple replaced in Village) and the Player Boards, which Renegade replaced for free! Can't wait to try it out...(2020-05-21) Adds more interesting decisions and additional paths to victory (or loss). Again, Shem is a master of expansion w/out complication. This is a great addition to the game. Looking forward to Fields of Fame...(2020-06-04)
The mead speeds up the game a little bit, by making it easier to raid the more difficult target. The quests provide an alternate way to get VP, which adds variability to the game and increases replayability. Overall, a very good rxpansin,
Appreciate how the art on the expansion board coincides with the base board. Have played with both expansions and it works well without adding too much complexity. The jarl addition is fun but makes the Valkyries even more difficult to stomach.
