Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

A worker placement that shakes up the most popular approach to the genre. Instead of trying to get more workers, you start with all your workers at your disposal (just like in Caylus, but this time you have a total 20 of them). Then you start sending them out to bring you more resources. Once your workers start stacking up on action spaces, you get even more powerful actions. Moreover, you can commit your workers permanently to a project (i.e. you lose to worker until the end of the game). Thus in a sense workers are now a one kind of resource. Another less seen mechanic in a worker placement game is that if you think that your rivals have stacked up too many workers onto a single space and are getting too powerful actions, you can capture your rivals' workers from one action space and send them into jail and actually collect money for it. This can spike up tension around teh table and create some really interesting moments during the game. I found the game to offer solid fun. Although there are quite many options, the game is not the worst for analysis paralysis. The various character and building cards spice up things nicely to keep things fresh from game to game. I cannot tell it yet whether this is just an ok game or a good one. For now, I will rate this a bit conservatively and just say that it is ok.

1 play / 4 players LIKE: The different parts of worker placement is fun, because the added mechanism of other players scooping up your workers to slow your engine is a nice interactive touch. I liked building an engine and then trying to speed the game up to end quickly by building quickly at the end. I also liked having to spread around workers as to not attract attention from the other players. The virtue track management is also a nice touch, as low virtue can be advantageous. DISLIKE: The game won't work if players don't scoop up each other's workers, as one person's engine could run away with the game. Knowing the building cards and being able to find the correct ones can be advantageous, if lucky. OVERALL: Good, solid game. I liked it! Very, very similar to Viticulture, but AotWK has more engine building, which I like, but the theme in Viticulture is more interesting.

This game is so smooth to learn and play. The turns are quick and easy and offer a lot of choices. Loved it!
