Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management

The problem here is the tentacles. There are treachery cards that will wrap up a hero and kill that hero unless he/she is saved by turn end. The tentacle enemies are problematic as attacking them can result in you hitting a friend instead or getting wrapped up in them and losing all ability to attack/defend. Condition removing cards don't work so you need ways of scrying the top card of the encounter deck. We made good use of some Lore cards and Denethor to peek at the top card of the encounter deck and manage the tentacles in that way. In the same way, we were able to crack the code of Duin's Door. Definitely need a lot of allies and threat management on this one. The problem is, there's a lottery aspect to the Duin's Door mechanism which feels wonky. Not one of my favorite packs.

Rating based on the scenario only. Interesting concept but the "tentacle" mechanisms are way too random. Not fun at all. The players barely have any control of what happens during combats with tentacles. In this scenario, luck of the draw is a lot more important than player decisions.

The Lord of the Rings LCG is so good I can't really believe FFG made this (well, after seeing the huge amount of faqs and clarifications I actually believe it was made by them...). The second cycle of expansions adds more awesomeness in form of new heroes, cards for the decks, and new quests. The Watcher in the Water adds some interesting new player cards and a very interesting new version of Aragorn. The adventure itself is not too difficult, but very enjoyable (and the tentacles mechanic is challenging!).
