Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

The quests are cool because they are like the movie, but they do fall a bit short sometimes in terms of gameplay.

The scenarios are cool, but I am a bit disappointed to find that all the player cards were heavily dwarf-centered. After this, I decided to not continue walking down the LOTR:TCG path.

I finally got sucked in to buying the next cycle for The Lord of the Rings LCG. The artwork is spectacular, and I love the theme, but I don't see this getting much play. It's simply too much of a time investment for what ultimately becomes a simple puzzle-solving mechanism, but I thought having a greater variety of cards might change that. At least the card variety means you can achieve the same quest solution using a different combination of cards, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to really open up the field to a variety of different solutions, which is a pity. I'm a bit soured on many FFG games because it seems they do little to no playtesting so I can't even go back and be sure I can play this game unless I keep up to date on the ever evolving list of FAQs, Erratas, and other corrections.
