Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

The third cycle of expansions continues adding more awesomeness to Lord of the Rings LCG, in form of new heroes, cards for the decks, and new quests. With Heirs of Númenor thing have been shaken up, with different statistics used for questing and increased difficulty. The adventure packs of this cycle definitely follow up on that! The Blood of Gondor contains a bunch of new cards for the players decks: Guthlaf the Rohirrim and Emery are probably the most notable cards. The scenario itself is fun and engaging, toying with the idea of being ambushed by unknown enemies using a face-down cards.

Blood of Gondor is unique in its hidden card mechanism. In this quest, you take encounter cards face down in front of you. You often have to choose between taking another face down card or turning all of your face down cards face up. If you turn them face up, each enemy you find stays with you while all others are discarded. This adds a push-your-luck element to the quest (separate from the usual risk-taking elements inherent to the game) that can be exciting, but also somewhat swingy and random. In the end, its a fun quest, but doesn't particularly stand out from the crowd. The player cards in this pack are fairly mediocre. There aren't really any that are staples in more than one or two deck types, though they certainly aren't a bad selection. The hero of the pack, Caldara, left many players (myself included) wondering at her usefulness when she came out, but she has grown more powerful over time and can be considered one of the strongest heroes in the game when she has a good deck built around her.
