Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I have a love-hate relationship with Heirs of Numenor. It is the most divisive deluxe expansion for the Lord of the Rings. The quests are interesting, but also punishingly difficult and have some very frustrating cards. There are a number of very good player cards in the box, including one of the most used heroes in the game in Beregond. While I think the box and the related cycle are worth owning, I wouldn't recommend either for players who are new to the game.

A well-done and refreshing change of pace from the last two cycles. The scenarios require completely new deck-building strategies and some even make a mono-Tactics (a sphere I never use) deck viable and fun. I'm looking forward to the rest of this cycle.
