The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.

A very strong recommendation! Fun to play, but not easy to master. Always had to check for the best strategy to get things rolling along...

[Bought from Amazon 2021-02-06] Fun game. A bit tricky with rules. Need multiple games to get into it.

Wir sind das Volk is strategic and tactically rich, but approachable enough that it can be taught pretty easily to new players. However, it'll take a few games for a new player to understand the strategy of the East/West--with the West being a bit more opaque than the East. The game provides interesting aspects of economy management and conflict management, and the game state is molded and developed with a historical bend (e.g., population flight from East to West, which is prevented by the Wall). The West, however, is given a few less tools than the East to implements its strategies, so is less interesting to play. Even after you've learned each faction, there's lots of fun to be had as each player choice helps develop the tactical landscape of the game. This is a very good conflict-based euro games, and is vastly superior to Twilight Struggle (e.g., playing while you, over time, learn the cards is actually fun). Still, I wish the West was as interesting to play as the East, and after 20 or so plays, my issue with the West has only become more pronounced. Finally, at least for me, the experience of this game leans more towards the Twilight Struggle CDG experience where much of the narrative generated by the cards fades in favor of the competition between the players. This is in contrast to, say, Washington's War where the events form a strong narrative to the game. There is still some narrative in Wir sind das Volk!, and it predominately shows up via the tracks and whether the East takes a special card. [Update] After revisiting it a bit more after taking a break from my heavy play two years ago, my quibbles mentioned above do melt away a bit. Quality through and through. Wir sind das Volk!: 2+2 (2017)
