Fleshes out the game experience with some character cards and miniatures, as well as some new Action Dice. Things that were events are now figures moving around the board, so it's worth having for that tactile bonus.

Too much randomness for a 3-hour game. Dice luck for the types of actions you can take on a turn, luck of the draw to have good/useful cards, dice luck for hunting for the ringbearers, and dice luck to win battles or perform certain actions.

I love war of the ring and I enjoy this expansion, however, I don’t think it’s entirely necessary. If you want to collect them all and have all the content I wouldn’t blame you one bit. This game is historically great. However, from a purely gameplay standpoint this game just adds more rules complexity. It’s not that bad, just not that necessary either. I think it helps free people player a little bit more than shadow. Galadriels ability to recruit in Lorien under siege is great for trying to hold that location longer, but the rest isn’t super impactful to what is already a great game. I’m glad I have it, but the game doesn’t need it.
