Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Turns a gateway-ish worker placement game into something much more deep with much more interesting decisions. Instead of 2 seasons you have all 4 open up, and I don't think I would ever play the original version unless I was pressed for time.

This is one of the most essential expansions I can think of. If you like the base game this is a no-brainer. If you thought the base was starting to get repetitive, this is a no-brainer. If you thought the base lacked some depth, this is a no-brainer.

Breaking the game into 4 distinct seasons is a big improvement on the game overall. It makes future planning, turn order, and saving workers that much more important.
