Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I wanted to like the base game much more than I did, despite being enamored with the components and the building of a wine making engine. However, it had far too much luck of the draw. This game mitigates card luck and adds extra strategic considerations. Great expansion.

This game hits a real sweet-spot for me: it's heavy enough to require some real thought, but not so heavy that it breaks your brain. The random elements are welcome in that they throw nice curveballs into the game, keeping a single analytical gamester from winning every game, but not so swingy that you can't plan for them. There are some clunky aspects and it ain't exactly pretty, but it's the perfect mid-weight experience for a game night.

This expansion adds a lot of deepness to the game. The extended board is the better addition: everything is equilibrated, and there are a lot more paths to gain reputation. The workers add variety, but some are plain better than others. The buildings add a lot of replayability: some are maybe overpowered, and some are situational, but it's pleasant to have more things to build and more options to build a strategy.
