Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Only played 5 solo games with this expansion. 7/20/2021: After playing Vinhos, I like Vinhos(w/ the Bank) slightly better multiplayer, but Viticulture Tuscany has a better solo.
Arcturian
This is exactly what it says: essential. I can think of no expansion for any game that's more important for getting the most out of the base game. If you want to play Viticulture, make sure you have this too. Tuscany has three modules, which you can use in any combination. The first, which you should *never* play without (unless you're a horrible person), is an expanded game board. It reorganizes the year to have four action seasons instead of two, replaces a couple of seldom-used actions from the original game with more interesting alternatives, revamps the passing / turn order mechanism into something far better than the original, and adds an influence map, which grants both in-game bonuses and endgame scoring opportunities. The second is a set of upgraded workers, which cost more to hire but have special abilities. At the beginning of the game you randomly choose two cards describing special workers, and each player can acquire at most one of each throughout the game. That there are so many possibilities helps the replay value of the game. The third is an additional deck of cards representing unique structures, and a small extension for the player boards that can accommodate at most two such structures. When you take the build action, rather than building one of the wooden buildings that come with the base game, you can play one of these new cards onto your board. Once again, this merely serves to introduce even greater variability into the game, without breaking its balance.

This game hits a real sweet-spot for me: it's heavy enough to require some real thought, but not so heavy that it breaks your brain. The random elements are welcome in that they throw nice curveballs into the game, keeping a single analytical gamester from winning every game, but not so swingy that you can't plan for them. There are some clunky aspects and it ain't exactly pretty, but it's the perfect mid-weight experience for a game night.
