Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Absolutely essential expansion for Viticulture. The most essential element is the board, which adds luck mitigation through card trade-ins and more stuff to do so that there are more alternate paths. It also has a far more exciting wake-up track. Superior in every way to the original & I say this as someone who loved the original. The rest of the expansion, like structures, I haven't even gotten around to playing with because I'm always teaching new players and the game is hard enough to grasp without these things. I think all the modules are very interesting and I would like to play them sometime, but it's the board that makes this expansion essential.

A very decent game, but I will say I prefer Vinhos for my competitive winemaking fix. Yet to try the Rhine Valley deck, but I have a real fundamental issue with a winemaking game that can be won without ever making wine, just by milling a deck of cards.

I feel infuriated at how poorly thought out the base game's wakeup chart is and frustrated that you have to pay a good amount of money to fix that through Tuscany. It was a severe flaw that held down the base game. That being said, Tuscany must be a great expansion because despite all the grievances, I don't feel cheated. The additional strategies through structure construction and influencing provinces add a great deal of welcome variability. With greater depth comes greater AP, and that's something for players to be aware of.
