Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.

The best expansions add to gameplay without changing the game. Tiny Towns: Fortune expands on the base game in two ways. 1.) The addition of coins might make it easier to get the resources you need, but in an effort to simultaneously build to earn those coins you might just trip up your own plans. And 2.) More building cards. Give me more building cards. I want AEG to just make an expansion deck of building cards to add even more variety.

This adds some fun variety to the game and also makes the game more forgiving - you can use coins to put down different resources of your choice. I like having additional cards, but overall, there's not a lot in the box and this isn't a must-have expansion. Also, the coins do make it easier to sidestep the most challenging aspect of the game - making do with the resources you've got.

The Fortune expansion introduces an interesting money mechanic that gives more flexibility during the game. It's pretty fun, although I don't know that it's required -- the base game is fine without it, although lower scores usually occur since you can't manipulate the resources as easily.
