Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

The best TM expansion to date? Would been if your not playing draft. Optional with Prelude for faster play (Venus still sucks). Introduces a working placement element which scales up the interaction from non-existent to light. (non draft) Also bring slight, and only slight snowball symbiosis (group mentality) where colonies get more effective and then more used the more they are devloped by several players. It works somewhat like houses in LoW, or cities in Concordia. On the negative side cards and resources are easier to get, and more cards get cycled. So it negates some of the blocking aspect when drafting.

Personally, this is my favorite TM expansion. I think it does a great job expanding on the space exploration theme, making the game-world feel much larger without taking your attention away from the goal of actually terraforming Mars. This easily bolts on to the base game, and I rarely play without it. I'll also note that many of the new cards use the "floater" resource (similar to microbes/animals). Floaters were introduced in the Venus Next expansion, which I do not have. Colonies totally works, floaters and all, without Venus Next.

Good expansion to have after you got prelude, New mechanic add more strategic layer without ruining the core game. Some project cards are a bit imbalance, as usual.
