Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

1 play / 3 players w/ HoH exp LIKE: I like the artwork. I like hiring crews or using them for an action, the card management is nice. I liked the progression of swapping out workers. It is a good gateway game. DISLIKE: A few of the cards are negative interaction, which isn't terrible but it's not high on my list. I also wasn't happy with some randomness in the card draws, for example, if I needed a "4" crew to go raiding and kept getting "0"s. The dice rolling for raids didn't bother me much, but it is a significant point differential. OVERALL: It's a charming game, and the expansion (Hall of Heroes) seems almost a must-add. I did find the game a tad boring, as it's more optimization than clever play. I think I enjoyed Architects more, but I feel this is a fine game to play. I have many games that fit in this weight range, so I'm on the fence if this is a keeper for me. Similar games: Viticulture, Lords of Waterdeep, Architects of the North Sea, Champions of Midgard, Stone Age

One of the best-in-class worker placement games. Easy to pick up and learn, lots of replayability. Eager to get the expansions!
