Best pirate game around. Initial concerns about there being one "right way to play" were pretty much wrong. Only complaint is the somewhat lackluster event deck.

I got this based on the strength of hype from those who claim it is better than the classic [thing=235][/thing]. This one lacks King's Commissioners, a lot of realism (at a cost of additional rules), historical pirates, and a broader scope for pirating (America & African coasts), but it is a simpler game with easy rules, good looking components, fast play, and its own interesting narrative. The one thing I didn't like about the game is that it seemed like it was easier to win with a merchant than a pirate. Boring! Pick up and deliver games are dull as dirt. But the Woelf solo rules fix that and make this into a solid solitaire game!

Love the theme, love the mechanics, love the tension, love the components. One of my favorite Eurogames of all time. Takes a huge amount of real estate, though, as you have a big board and lots of stuff to go with it. Small price to pay. Only quibble is that merchants always seem to win, no matter how aggressive the pirate players are. Seas of Glory helps to address this, though not entirely.
