This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

[microbadge=1966][microbadge=4143][microbadge=18088][microbadge=50101][microbadge=5191] NOTE: Much of what I've written about [person=174]Phil Eklund[/person] in the past was written with the understanding that I had a fundamental difference of opinion with him in as far as the ethics of economic systems, the role of government and community in the lives of individuals, and the human-originated negative impact on climate. After his public remarks in early 2021, I have to take a stronger stand and say that Eklund is absolutely wrong in his political, historical, and scientific assessment of the world. I personally am dissuaded from purchasing any of his future titles, and I would encourage any discerning board game purchasers or players to make a careful read of his public remarks, manual footnotes, and essays. The idea that a harmful or problematic statement is useful because it encourages discussion and research is flawed; some perspectives are wrong and should not be further engaged or platformed. My existing comments and ratings will remain the same as they were, as changing them now would be as disingenuous as the type of thinking that I am protesting. [microbadge=5389] Right off the bat, this should have been called Terawatt & Freighters, right? You can't buy just this box and play with Futures, since you need Colonization for Futures. Plus, the title as is neglects one of the most powerful aspects of the expansion that blows up the decision space: freighters and freighter fleets. All that said, this is a wild expansion for simple power level. Gigawatt and Terawatt Thrusters have so much raw power, and the outer planets and their satellites are suddenly in easy reach. Freighters are useful simply for the ability to move more than one piece per turn, which allows plenty of possibilities. Freighter fleets are terrifyingly powerful, allowing swarms of factories to move at will and creating instant and constant opportunities for ET production and promotion. As always, skip the footnotes.

Phil Eklund is right with his statements regarding the climate. I respect him for his courage to speak up. As you can see from many people here, other opinions are no longer desired. Now to his game. High Frontier is an absolute masterpiece!
