Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

While Cthulhu stuff is getting played out for me, this is a pretty nifty area control game where you play as various cultists competing to summon their god first! The fact that there's two different win conditions (summon your great old one, or having the fewest elder signs when someone else has maxed out) is the main hook. Theme is on the darker side, though the fact that there's two different winning conditions means that players will end up trying to call investigators on other cults lightens the mood.

This would've been a 5 if I hadn't created standees with icons to show what each spot on the altar did. Even with that improvement, it still doesn't feel like I'm running a cult, despite all the rules and mechanisms at work here. Although the game isn't that complex, it's too complex for a game that's so abstract.

I have had the luck to demo Fate of the Elder Gods twice now and it compares well with Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu and the Arkham Horror Card Game which I have also demoed recently. Fate of the Elder Gods has certain advantages over those other titles: + It has considerably more player interaction. No 4 player solitaire here! + The game play is more dynamic despite lightning fast player turns. + The game board is drop dead gorgeous! + Innovative mechanics - the interaction of the Astral Column with spell casting and Curses (crossroads) are my favorite. + And finally more dice! Dice rolling with the randomness mitigated by Artifact abilities. All this with only the base game! A Monster expansion entitled 'Beasts from Beyond' will be included with a basic pledge if the SG is met. Don't miss out!
