Disney Villainous: Wicked to the Core
40m - 60m
2 - 3 Players
Ages 10+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

As a standalone expansion, Wicked to the Core only adds three characters: but it doesn’t change anything of the core rules, so I’ll just copy the same comment I wrote for the basic game; my rating is the same too. Villainous is unlike any other game that I’ve played: it isn’t particularly original or innovative, sure, but overall it feels different enough, one of its kind, and in a very enjoyable way. First of all, the theme. The theme blends perfectly with the mechanisms and even finds ever new ways to adapt itself and bend the core rules to fit the character’s specifics, which makes every villain and the way they play completely different from each other. Then, the rules, that are simple to grasp and serve their purpose well. Again, having a a core of rules that are the same for all and then tuning them individually through specific decks isn’t a prime but the way it’s done in Villainous is consistent with the overall feeling of the game. This also has an additional benefit: it makes for an asymmetrical game that surprisingly still feels balanced despite giving each player completely different conditions to be met. Here luck - such as in drawing earlier a card you need to win - still has a role but isn’t overwhelming, as the game seems to have some kind of an internal balancing mechanism that prevents players from running away too soon to never be caught up with again due to a combination of luck and skills. The one thing that Villainous seems to be lacking in is interaction, since players have to focus mainly on their next turn and can mess with their opponents only occasionally, more in an effort to slow them down than to damage them. But, again, the way it’s done fits both thematically and mechanically and doesn’t turn the game into open war, which is a benefit for a game targeted at families and casual gamers. It’s very likely to grow tired of Villainous over the time since, despite the different characters and paths to victory, the core game doesn’t change by an iota and each character has to be played always in the same way over and over: the one way that has been paired with that character, no digressions or alternatives possible. But it still takes some time as you can explore as many as six characters before possibly being fed up with the game: this means around a score of plays, which is more than it takes most other games. And then, you can still switch over to the expansions.

Very fun. Evil Queen is more fun with every play, Hades can be oddly sneaky, and Dr. Facilier is a fun puzzle. Not as great against each other, but fun mixed with the rest. Best expansion so far, more like this please
