This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

The bridges are tricky to play well, the castles make small cities a bit more interesting, the bazaars are bizarre and sort of a bit clunky to deal with. Pretty average expansion.

The bazaars are just plain fugly... and the mechanic is worthless in 2p games (99% of my plays are 2p games). The bridges are quite nice and the castles are ok.

2010-04-14 (rating 9): Great expansion. All the new mechanics are excellent and add much to the game. Bridges ease meadow expanding/stealing. They can be used to escape blocked position however in our games this happens rarely. Mostly we use them for meadows. Castles are not easy to use (due to 2 tiles city requirement) but are a fine way of protection against opponent building too large city. Thanks to castle you can assure that both you and opponent will score the same amount of points. Bazaars are also fun. But not as much as the first two features. But my opinion may be caused by the fact that I have played this expansion (for now!) only with my wife in 2-players games. Also I think that normal auction would be better than current rules. Maybe I will try such variant some day. Also it is interesting how Bazaars interact with [gameid=45748]. Now you see how the Wheel will turn and you may try to influence order of turns (by auctioning appropriate tiles) for your benefit.
