Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Deck building/Pool building refers to a collection of related mechanisms. Players have a personal pool, or collection, of cards or tokens, that provide different actions and/or resources. A subset of those cards/tokens are randomly drawn each turn.
Deck / Pool Building
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

October 2022 - 10 - 10+ plays + Fantastic game. + Hand management decisions choosing when to play the cards lead to great decisions. + Simple rules, medium weight, lots of depth of play. + Lots of expansion maps add additional tweaks for even more replayability. + Buying cards for more actions which are also used for scoring at the end of the game works very well. + Plenty of interaction with other players but often complementary where it isn't hurting the other player, sometimes befitting both players. = Most my our games have been at 2 player which isn't ideal due to less interaction with other players. - Scoring is a bit confusing your first play or two.

Played Imperium map a friend's copy with upgraded coins and resources, which made for a beautiful table. Good time, game that is simple mechanically and able to keep everyone engaged because of it. In 3hrs we must have played 50+ turns each. There were several new payers, several breaks for questions and research. There's a lot to do, always open moves, and sandbox play. Extremely low confrontation, the only way to interfere with another is to block or pre-empt which is more likely to happen by accident than by intent. This makes for an inoffensive game ... but perhaps one that will bore competitive or conflict-loving players. The only weird things are the scoring and the theming. The only worry is replayability. Scoring ... the game provides no means to have a clue as to how well you are doing. Scoring is multifaceted. The game ought to provide a tracker or tool for tallying up notches as you go. Going to have to DiY something. Game could also use double sided card holders, for holding your hand, and displaying the last card you played, and who has the Prefectus Magnus bonus. Theming ... game seems to reward building networks, but most importantly, sponsoring candidates into offices, using money to influence politics to further business. Or at least that was my interpretation. The theme can be seen as pasted on, but if it were explained better, the themed would be quite strong indeed. Replayability ... This isn't so simple (like TtR) that you can play again and again w/o burning out. I fear that after a few plays, it would take a new map to get into it ... and I note there are several maps for sale. Suggests to me the # of plays per dollar spent could get quite low if you go down this rabbit hole. A great, if gamey simulation of the Roman world, for ctudents of Roman politics, culture, and/or geography.
