Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

So far, so good. Excellent gameplay makes this one feel different from other, similarly styled board games. Combat takes a backseat to exploration and is improved because of it. Rather than fighting things for the sake of doing something, each battle feels important; that it will yield something worthy of nearly dying for. The number of quests, locations and items is astounding but never really feels overwhelming. Collecting totems is particularly rewarding as you're likely only going to do it once. It is a LARGE game, both footprint-wise and content-wise, so that could be a turn off to some. However, the campaigns are a bit shorter and you can spend several turns just traveling to a far away area, eating up decent portions of campaigns.

Disappointing game for what I was looking for. I am a hardcore solo gamer and this game does not do it for me. Is it a bad game? Most certainly not and for the right group it is probably a great game. I wish it had been released 5+ years ago and I'd bet top dollar that my sons and I would have had a blast with it. It has a light, whimsical story and my sons would have loved exploring and reading the passages. But, alas, they have grown up and don't play games with Dad anymore, and thus the game does not work for me. I also have an issue with the "groundhog day" mechanic. You start at a specific spot on the map and start exploring. 1/3 of the way through the game there is a scripted event, 2/3 of the way through is another scripted event, and then the finale can go in one of about 13 different directions. Now, in order to see the other 90% of the game, I need to make different decisions, go in different directions, but the same two scripted events before the finale do not ever change, and the finale is only different, if I choose alternative options. That artificial replayability did not work for me. I would have preferred a connected campaign to see all of what the game offers, not a game that relies on me to make different choices to see more of it. Think of playing a huge D&D adventure, completing it, and replaying it over and over but doing different things each time. That would get old, as did this game for me after two campaigns and about 25 hours.

I need to set aside a minimum of three hours to play. But then I'll play all day/night with great story, challenges and adventuring
