Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

Maybe I am getting burnt out on long campaign games; was invested through first few hours but got a bit bored in the mechanics. Could be because I am soloing. I did enjoy the combat mechanics.

Once you get into it, Sleeping Gods is a beautifully crafted atlas game. There is so much to explore and so many ways to go about your journey and the replayability is superb. The game mechanics can feel clunky at first, but after a few rounds they feel very natural. The only real downside to this game is the save system, which could just as well be non-existent. My recommendation is to leave the game on the table and take turns at your leisure.

"Sleeping Gods" feels unique with its collection of odd mechanics: command tokens, combat rules, a gigantic atlas, a storybook, a bunch of complementary characters. At first this was disconcerting to us, but after two sessions (getting halfway through our first deck of events) we're beginning to understand how it all works together...and it does! The stories are fun, the choices are significant, gameplay is relatively forgiving (if you aren't foolhardy), and every reward feels like a joy. In addition, the writing is charming to read and we look forward to every adventure. It's a table hog and it takes effort to set up and put away, and when combat occurs it can take up a large amount of playtime, but when Sleeping Gods succeeds at what it's trying to do (which it usually does) then it succeeds very well.
