Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.

Cancelled preorder because of getting a weird vibe from these creators. Something is off that I can't pinpoint. I hate it when they put better dice as an addon. Gives me the feeling they are cheaping out. And why is shipping from the UK to Canada just as expensive as to NL/DE/BE? Also somebody there can't calculate or communicate.

After three solo games using three characters I can say "Good game and I would suggest it ... but only to the right type of gamer." Legends Untold feels like a beefed up Four Against Darkness with some game book vibes to me. If you're looking for a randomized dungeon crawl for one to four characters, random events, combat and high production values, then this game may be for you. However, the combat isn't tactical (no mini skirmish game here) and they're are a lot of little rules, so you'll really want to make use of the flowchart in the files section. So keep that in mind if you're considering it. It's a win for me though. When the Kickstarter comes up for the third expansion, I'll be a backer.

Nice compact RPG feel, with lots of exploration and non combat encounters. I'm wondering how well difficulty will scale as you level up. Very reasonable play time, hits the hour mark pretty reliably. Excellent solo or with another person. If one player knows the rules fairly well, this works reasonably well with neophyte players. Update 3/18/2021: Does feel fiddly after not touching the game for a year. The exploration is done pretty well. I think I like the one off adventures more than the campaign. Combat has some good ideas but is not particularly exciting. Iron Helm is much simpler and also more fun. 6/21/21: There are a lot of small exceptions to the rules such as minor variations between tasks, etc. sometimes my influence over the randomness is frustrating, maybe that's better at high levels with more gear. I still enjoy the exploration and emergent story aspects, but this is a convoluted system and it is easy to forget a modifier here or there. Definitely reread all of the rules if you put this down for a couple months. 12/31/22: the overhead for this one is too great for what it offers. I may do this solo with one character but the campaign doesn't feel worth it. Rulebook is a bit of a mess and missing important details
