Roll for the Galaxy: Rivalry
Expansion of:
Roll for the Galaxy
30m - 60m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 14+
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Phase Order implies that turns may not be played the same way as before and/or after.
Variable Phase Order
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

First, I should note that I've only played the "orb game" version of "Rivalry." I personally enjoyed the upgradable die aspect. However, a couple of the players at our table seemed to find that a bridge too far to cross, and I can't deny that it's extremely hard to keep track of other players' dies when you're fiddling with changing faces on your own. As such, I'd only recommend this expansion for seasoned RftG fans who need something new to spice up their games.

Hideously overpriced, but solid expansion. The deal game is a 6 (or 5) based on the explanation I saw; it seems convoluted and crazy. Extra tiles are a straight 7 - always good and expected. The Alien Orb Die is an 8 - fun cool expansion. Overall, a seven. Would buy the orb and tiles expansions separate, but definitely not paying the 80.

Not the biggest fan of expansions that offer you modules instead of allowing to put everything in together. However, I have to admit the expansion looks good, from what I've seen. I have only tried the "Orb Technology" module which was a solid addition to the usual choice tree each player has. Keen to try other modules to get a better idea of the expansion. --- lebryant's TOP expansions of all time --- [2022]: 24/45 (top 53%) | Rating - 5 | Overall Plays - 1 [2021]: 20/41 (top 49%) | Rating - 6 | Overall Plays - 1 [2019]: 20/38 (top 52%) | Rating - 6 | Overall Plays - 1
