The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.

Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.

After an initial play, I will rate this a 7. I feel like it is likely to go higher as we get more plays in, but my first impressions are marred by the fact that the game simply doesn't scale well across the stated player count. This is not a 1-5 player game, it is a 3-5 player game. Yes, you can play it solo if you control 3+ characters, and yes, you can play it 2p if one or both players control extra characters, but this is garbage, in my opinion. Not as bad as Zombicide, in that regard, however. Also, the absolute mess of cards that are not presorted in any way, and are not clearly labeled for sorting, also didn't help. Jumping between the rulebook and the scenario book to figure out the gameplay, and STILL having ambiguous rules questions is not unique to this game, but still annoying. HOWEVER... I really liked the actual gameplay and upgrade mechanics, and I'm looking forward to the next time I get to play. It's gonna go smoother, I already know that, so it should be all up from here.

My playing group played through the entire campaign within a week and a half (playing at least one game a day). Games are generally fast paced and fun. The game is definitely not as rule heavy as some of the RPG based board games on the market, which will make it more accessible for some players. One word of warning, the creators intentionally made the rules somewhat vague at times. While this worked well at times (like with line of sight as it avoided needing to pull out the straight edge all the time like I've had to do on some other games), it did lead to some debates between players at times (especially on edge cases). My gaming group found that if you just went with what the intent seemed to be, it worked well and the game was a lot of fun. However, this could be a sticking point for some groups (though it appears the creator has begun to address some of the questions related to these edge cases in the BGG forum so it is possible this issue might be addressed at some point in the future). In order avoid ending on a negative note (I did give it a rating of 9 after all), I would like to add that even before completing the campaign everyone was talking about playing through the campaign a 2nd time in order to try out different character builds and different choices (there were a number of encounters we didn't play due to choosing a different path in the campaign book).
