Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

A shadow of the past: ok. Thematically very cool, but it goes at the expense of the mechanics. Wins/losses: 4/2 A knife in the dark: brilliant quest! Very thematic, gives enough time to build up, and then crushes you in the end in an epic end battle. Epic! Wins/losses: 2/3 Flight to the ford: Fun quest, although there's quite some luck involved in which encounter cards you reveal. Wins/losses: 2/1

This is a large stand-alone (with no small expansions branching from it) expansion, aka "Saga" expansion. The Black Riders is set during the times of the book (not between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, like other scenarios), and does a great job in capturing the book's spirit: the three scenarios accompany the heroes in their first steps from the Shire into the vast world of the Middle Earth. The scenarios can be played in stand alone mode, or chained together in an epic 18 scenarios (spread among 6 boxes) campaign! Furthermore, the players cards have an extraordinary Hobbit focus, and even used alone together with just a core set, an amazing Hobbit deck can be built. An awesome expansion.

4 hobbit heroes! That alone would have excited me, but the thematic quests and unique mechanics really make this a stand-out expansion.
