Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Sadly, Rex Murphy had to give his life for the group to succeed. All while doing what he is best at: investigating the absolute SHIT out of this Expansion! Great roll, Carcosa arrives the day after tomorrow. Sadly, this time wothout the insanely OP Rex.

I really like this scenario a lot. The board can be a complete jumble in terms of how the locations work, and the order you draw certain locations can certainly be very make or break for advancing the story, but I love the fact that the decisions you've made throughout the campaign affect it during each step of the Act deck and how effectively the shifting and unpredictable board evoke the theme of Lovecraftian madness. Unlike some of the earlier stories, this one does a good job of rewarding your investigators for doing what they are good at. There are plenty of monsters for the hunters to deal with, plenty of points at which clues are important, and you definitely will want some willpower to be able to move around effectively and survive the what the encounter deck throws at you. It is a bit odd that it is totally reasonable to get a good resolution that has nothing to do with defeating or even confronting the villain du jour, Yog Sothoth, but on the other hand I've never really thought it all that reasonable that humans can actually fight elder beings and succeed, so on that front I guess it might be most thematic to win by merely escaping. Really though, this is a fun and flavorful adventure and definitely my favorite from the Dunwich cycle. It's a shame that the previous adventure can so easily lead to players missing this one due to premature death. In terms of player cards, briefly, this box adds a lot of high experience cost cards, most of which are actually best purchased ASAP in the middle of a campaign as the 5 pip weapons like Lightning Gun and Chicago Typewriter, though they will have some use here, are really more the type of thing that you should craft your deck around earlier if you are going to bother to pick them up. There are some entertaining one shots that I could see buying just for the heck of it (like Red Gloved Man or Gold Pocket Watch), but most of them won't actually help all that much for this particular story, or certainly not appreciably so. The obvious exception is probably Deciphered Reality, which is awesome in any adventure like this where a lot of clues can be flipped out and available at the same time. If you own this box, crack it, add them to your pool, and buy them earlier to get maximum benefit though!
