2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.
Player Elimination
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Oh, I love solving mysteries. Watson & Holmes takes a less frequently seen approach on the matter since the deduction part of the games is not just simple elimination of possibilities, but you actually have complete freedom to give you own answers. This makes the game a lot harder and leaves room for interpretation but at the same time it feels more realistic. Of course, games depending heavily on story telling are only as good as the story is (within the limits given by the game). Here the mechanics are simple enough not to limit the story too much. However there are a couple of things that feel a bit forced. For example the Watson mechanic feels completely unnecessary. Another one is the locking of certain clues from other players by placing a bob to guard it. You want to lock a clue when only you have read it, thus with more players you almost certainly must do that on your first turn. Hence the game follows a scripted path on the first turns. Moreover, since everyone has a chance to lock a clue, is the meaning of the whole mechanic reduced pretty much to zero. I understand that these elements have been added to make the game more like a boardgame but in my opinion the game is better without them. You already have the characters with (weak) special abilities and you are bidding on the privilege to read clues, and that is all it takes to make this a boardgame.

Competitive version of Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective. Heard about this on Shut Up & Sit Down. I desperately want to play this with the Crandalls.

The stories are well done. But the mechanics are at times an odd affair. The bidding system is serviceable and the players powers are adequate. The lock and key mechanic can be annoying which is perhaps the intention. And as a last point, players can be eliminated (determined by the player themselves because they can guess the solution when ready, but if wrong are eliminated from the game) which although unavoidable in the design, is unfortunate in play. But thematically, it is there and the mysteries are compelling.
