Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Shadows in Kyoto is a stratego-esque game where you move your units, but your opponent doesn't know what units are being moved. In this game, your moves are chosen from the cards you draw. You mostly have normal movement cards (colored cards that match what's on the board) and tactics cards which allow for aberrant moves (swapping pawns, horizontal moves across the board, etc). Combat is a lot more streamlined than in LotR Confrontation, as higher numbers simply beat lower numbers, except the lowest number beats the highest. Some of these pawns have a special marking on them. The goal is to either get one of those pawns to your opponents back row or capture all opponents specially marked pawns. You have to be careful, though. If you capture all your opponents pawns that do not have the special marking, you lose. If you play the basic game, sides are symmetric. There are additional modules that allow for asymmetric aspects of each side (i.e. player powers). This is a very streamlined double-guess and bluffing game that plays very quickly and gets you into the action asap. My biggest gripe with this game are the wooden pawns. [thread=1921614][/thread] I feel like this is a game I want to love more than I actually do and one that I enjoy less than LOTR Confrontation. That being said, if you enjoy games like Stratego, you definitely want to give this one a shot.

2021-09: A slightly better than ok game. There are some good ideas here but they don’t come together well. Also I found the CDG aspect to be awkwardly bolted on.

Abstract Hybrid (with elements of): Battleline + Odin's Raven's+ Stratego + Chess + Checkers + Onitama all rolled into one...if you like at least 2 or three of these games you'll like this. Nothing ground breaking but a solid 2P 15 Min Tug -O-War. The theme is a bit off putting to me as it seems "overdone" at this point. I'd rather Mad Comics SPY vs SPY or something along those lines.
