This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Games where you repeat an action (or part of an action) until you decide to stop due to increased (or not) risk of losing points or your turn.
Press your Luck
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

I really enjoy the economy in this game, the way the money flows through the players given the type of auction used in the game. Valuing cards well, and trying to take advantage of that system was pretty fun. However, it really felt like the game needed just a little more development. In particular, I really, really, dislike the end game mechanism. There is a deck of action cards with 5 War cards in it, with one event card drawn on each player's turn. When the 4th War appears, the game immediately ends, and the current leader wins. This made it feel like the winner was a total crap shoot, as the current leader can easily change from turn to turn, and you have no way to regain the lead until your turn comes back around again. It felt like the winner was just whoever is lucky enough to be in the lead when the crucial 4th War card hits. Overall, I like a good chunk of this game, and I really dislike another chunk. I'd be interested to see this one developed more.

I found this one to be pretty mediocre. The auctions were mildly amusing but the event deck was brutal and the abrupt ending felt very unsatisfying.

I think this is really something; you are going to have a hard time finding a small game that packs as big of a punch. Old school design in the sense that a very basic rule set centers attention on clever play and player interaction rather than overly elaborate game mechanics. Fantastic theme though with distracting anachronistic artwork catering to postmodern (in)sensibilities. Definitely deserves "hidden gem" status.
