The first time in probably ~1000 final production titles that a game is so broken, our experienced group had to agree to abort the first playthrough. That is a shame and I don't really understand how a publisher like Pandasaurus can risk its reputation like that and how this can not become obvious in playtesting. What prevents this from a 1 ranking is the mostly very nice production quality (thanks to Kickstarter), except for the smelly bag, underwhelming and not really fitting rune cardboard and the gold skulls that are so dark they are hard to distinguish from the black ones. Also I don't understand how you can not print the score values of the different fields on the scoring fields track. That just feels like they forgot it. Also shouldn't happen in a final production, but humans make mistakes and this one could be easily fixed with a pen. However, what makes the game broken is that you can end up with a game where, when no black skulls enter play in a way to produce or even allow in our case the choice of a public ritual, players are discouraged to take the first 1-2 private ritual actions. When you play with serious gamers that means they just won't be taken until very late in the game. This can easily (and did in our case) lead to the bag of skulls being empty without any player making any weird decisions. The game explains what to do when the cards run out (which I can't really see happening) but does not provide a solution for this!? Apparently there is now an official FAQ ruling on it that tells the players to force the players who have the majority of each colour to throw back 3 skulls each into the bag. This effectively breaks the game right there as it absolutely ruins 1-2 players. In the worst case this can lead to a 48 point penalty to a player that was going for a skull strategy (which is encouraged by the corresponding score track field). This - both that it can happen and the current official ruling - shows pretty clearly to me that the designers either didn't and don't care or don't know what they are doing. Without being broken like that, the game might achieve a 5 star rating for me for reasons others have elaborated already (mediocre, somewhat overloaded euro game with a thrown on theme and same flashy game components).

This board game deserves a lot of love and fans!!! It's a great game, you can't stop thinking what you're gonna do next and how you're gonna do it to earn more points!!! I don't know how it is possible that Catan has a better rating than this one!

Nice game, thematically goood but not awesome. What I really, really like was when we tallied the score. One player has 126 points and 5 bones. The next had.... 126 points and 5 bones. The third had...124 points and 5 bones! The third player was the one who finished the game by summonning 7 guests. I really wish he could have squeezed out 2 more points! We had an unusual game, with red skulls being extremely (really, really extremely) rare. It still worked.
