Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Much thinkier than Five Tribes(to which people compare to and for good reason). Although the two games do play and feel differently, they kind of have a few commons (djinns vs specialists namely as well as the point salad nature). They escalate differently though (Five Tribes having tons of stuff at the beginning of the game, options getting less and less as the game goes on, while Yamatai starts with so few things but ramps up by the mid of game, specialists playing such a vastly more important role that djinns in Five Tribes). It is indeed much more AP prone than Five Tribes, but that aside, it has beautiful presentation and it seems to keep suspense in terms of who won (although the final scores are not in the 200s,like Five Tribes, more in the 35s).Great game but heavier and thinkier than Five Tribes.

Love the artwork and the components. Matching patterns of ship colors to place buildings is different from any other games I have and a little tricky for some people to relate to but those who enjoy it, like myself, really love it. I like the 2-player version giving double moves, and prefer this at 2 or 3.

I think like many I was hoping for another Five Tribes experience. This isn't quite as good - that much I'm sure. I like some aspects of it and it certainly is challenging. Lovely, lovely production of course which is likely the only reason I'm keeping it (for now). I want to give it at least another play or two before coming to a final conclusion. For now, I'm only so-so with it.
