Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

I must be playing things really wrong because I have to make a bunch of house rules to get even close to a chance of winning the game even on the lowest difficulty levels

12/03/2022 X-Men Insurrection is a fun good time that unfortunately didn't get it's time under the sun. While there are a lot of Marvel theme games, and I definitely haven't played them all, this left me pleasantly surprised and happy on how the mechanics give flavor to my favorite Marvel IP. I won't say that this will ever be in the upper echelon of board games, but if you want to have a true cooperative experience, enjoy the X-Men theme, and chuck some dice, this does it beautifully. You have to accept chance, and if you hate dice, this won't be the game for you. Yet it gives you the choice to set difficulty, different mutant characters, and ample opportunities to accommodate all the chance possible. We've only played this on an easy difficulty, but we are genuinely excited to bring this out to the table again and set it in a higher difficulty to kick our butts. All the while playing with some of our favorite characters, which they give you a fairly sized roster to choose from. I can see someone playing this a ton and going through all the content in the box, and while there aren't expansions for this one, it really is telling that this game keeps motivating you to take it out and want to play it again and again. And while I may not keep it for a long time, I really am excited to keep chipping away at this game until we get through everything that we want. Do to poor sales, we probably won't ever see expansions. Tho if you ever see it on sale, I highly recommend it if you love this world and want a fun excuse to get with some buddies and have a fun time creating your own dice chucking lore.

PROS: The theming is *excellent*. Based heavily on the mechanics of Elder Sign, and about as complex as Omens of the Pharaoh or Omens of the Deep. 'X-Men: MI' adds just enough of the Arkham Horror LCG story flavor mechanics to make this a unique hybrid of all of the above and... mostly works. Pretty good solo mode plays similar to AH LCG, though of course X-Men themed. CONS: The continent decks (missions, ala the museum deck in Elder Sign) only have six cards in each pile, and only five piles so there's not much replayability there. And the villain and story stacks are similarly limited. The major CON though, is that the set-up and play-time feel too long and involved for what feels like it should be a faster/simpler game. And the real estate this takes up on the table is *hefty*. If you get the massive playmat, it still isn't large enough to contain the play area and your characters in any logical way. Ultimately, this is an aesthetically beautiful but "just alright" game that feels like it's one or two expansions away from being a really good game. Though, it doesn't seem like an expansion is on the way.
