Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management

My favourite implementation of Pandemic. Theme and IP help, but also the different characters, the escalation in the game and also the tweak to difficulty. Yeah it's light but I enjoy it.

A slightly dreary Pandemic rebuild; it’s not terrible but it lacks most of the charms of its parent game. Like a few post-Pandemic follow-ons, it seems to try to address the perceived “alpha player” problem by removing most of the reasons players need to cooperate. This seems stupid to me; the solution to the “alpha player” “problem” is to not play with assholes, not to dumb down the game to the point of pointlessness. If you’re a Pandemic player of some skill, this is almost hilariously easy, so go right to heroic-level difficulty. I should say too, the World of Warcraft theming was almost totally lost on me, so ymmv if you find this universe appealing. I just thought it was a bit silly. Finally: there is misogynist fantasy art. I don’t expect much from FFG, but I do expect more from Z-Man (update: apparently Z-Man tried pretty hard to tone down the misogyny, but Blizzard refused to allow it. Perhaps this wasn’t the smartest company to partner with?). Pandemic-branded games that don’t have Matt’s name on them have always been a grab bag; Rise of Cthulhu is rather good, but the others have been mostly quite bad. This isn’t in that category; it’s not great but you can play it and there is some fun to be had. But it’s not in the same league as the mainline Pandemics.

It could be at this point that I am just tired of the pandemic system, but this wasn't as exciting as i was anticipating going in. The theme works well, and the things it does differently than Pandemic are cool, but I don't think there is enough here for me to want to come back and play again. Yes there is variety on the setup, but i don't think it is enough variety to keep the game fresh. I still think Defenders of the Realm (although it has been many years since i played) did this "fantasy pandemic" better, and would actually prefer to just play that version over this.
