The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Big Bad Lex
First play: Four players. Got very good impression from the rule book that this was to be a quality experience and I wasn't disappointed. The action mechanism works well with painful decisions needed at times. Echos of Mombassa and Tzolkin which can only mean good things for the game. So far the best game from Essen 2017 for me.

I was super excited about the theme on this one but it just didn't click for us. The first issue we had was the rulebook. It was a big disconnected and explained terms out of order and referenced things on other pages. For a pretty modern game, there was no iconography reference but at least they explained the tiles. We typically found ourselves flipping to the front to learn the term, flipping back to the rules, then they reference some at the end, then you flip to the tile page just to understand a section. The second issue we had was the length and repetitiveness. For about two hours you will be pumping tracks doing the same actions and that is it. That said there is some cleverness. I really like the grid of using an action, flipping it over, the lower row drops off, then you get to upgrade it. That is really clever and the best part of the game as you build your action selection engine. The rest of the game kind of falls flat in comparison where most of the actions are take a resource, buy an ability, sell resources for points. The area control aspect often wasn't worth fighting for on the resources because you can sell the ones you produce at the market instead. For example boats are not contested so grab some fish then trade for what you need. With such easy access to trading and the other resources they become a bit meaningless independently and just become something you grab to cash in. In the end you score on the lowest of two tracks which are random during setup which initially felt very clever but it suffers the same problem as the resources. You will really try to do everything to move up on all of them unless you can really get an engine going for the two that are paired together but that is short sighted because you will eventually hit the max while having no engine going on the other track. So again the individual tracks become meaningless as you pump all of them equally as best as you can. That game of pumping tracks was enjoyable but I don't know that it was enough of a puzzle or enough differentiation after several plays without it feeling samey. All the randomness results in the same gameplay just slightly out of order actions to get you there. Also the abilities in the second tier were a bit of a let down. Some tiles let you put out multiple boats later in the game but at that point there is really no purpose. I found the last few rounds not being able to do much because of the tiles we previously activated and none of the resources or other actions contributed to scoring. So you built up this engine, used what you could, and then just coasted through. I was hoping for a bigger finish but it just ends with looking at the two tracks and done. I don't intend to sound like I didn't like it because it was an enjoyable experience the first time. I just don't think it would be a game for us and one that kept us coming back and thinking of new strategies to try.

Multi language version for sale at 35€ plus shipping- PM plz. Difficult to rate after initial play. I like the innovative mechanisms when it comes to scoring and action selection, but I fear that there's too much randomness for such a long and relatively complex game. Player order CAN be relevant, but being first can also screw you as a better tile may come up just after your choice. Wouldn't recommend with more than three, four player game felt really long as downtime increases round by round due to the upgraded action tiles.
