The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I quite liked my first play of this game - with the optimal number of 4 players. It is a partner game where you can openly discuss what to do (in the hearing of your opponents). The often experience of banishing your cards - at times not a choice, but an attack - is cruel. Hands of cards at times were utterly worthless due to the restrictive nature of card types and phases of the game. So I didn't find it perfect, but did find it very thematic and enjoyable.

It's just OK. Luck of the draw plays too large of a role for my taste. Didn't draw any of the right faction for the battlefield? Too bad. Drew a bunch of items for characters you don't have? So sorry. The reserve lets you preserve a few cards to hope for better luck next turn, but...blah.

Feels like Quartermaster General but better and greater. I think this one works better in a 2 player game and in 4 players need everyone at table understand the general idea about the game itself.
