Viticulture Essential Edition

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

It's the most rewarding board game I have ever played - think of Agricola - and then take the opposite and you have Viticulture. The game just feeds you happy stuff (cards with great bonuses aaaaaalllll the time)

Oh wow... I am so glad to have bought this on a whim. Super theme, highly replayable, challenging and has a great look too.

It's ok, but it plays out almost exactly the way I expected it to. No surprises at all. On the one hand I like that and the gentle, quiet, rhythmic nature of this. It's a relaxed game with a little bit of light screwage thrown in. You could happily play this in the garden with a glass or two, which I imagine thousands of friends and families do. There's a fair bit of card chrome and a fair bit to learn at first - but nothing major compared to most worker placement games. So far, fine - but no more than that. What I think is really good is the artwork and the fact that the rythym of the seasons is worked through quite nicely in the board and the rhythm of the play. It picks up a point or two for that. What isn't so good is the fact that it is, stripped of it's gloss, not much of a game to get excited about. It's kind of an slightly below averge game in a beautiful body. And what's more it's got a lot of card-chrome (and I'd imagine the Tuscany Essential Edition would add a vineyard more, even if some of it is good chrome). So it's rather like a fashion model - all clothes, make up and beauty, but maybe there is not that much underneath. I am surprised it has got so much attention and high ratings. Perhaps there is a bit of following high fashion in this too. Even so, I like the theme and it might be gentle enough to keep in the collection as occasional game on a summer or autumn day, but my wife was not overly impressed. When asked what she thought of it, she said, "it's ok, but it's a little bit tedious."
