The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

It is not a steel inferno, it is a buckets of dice inferno. The German player rolled at least 70% success on his barrages. During turns 1 and 2, he only had to face actual infantry combat once. During turn 4 he took Verdun and 2 more south map edge VP hexes.

Interesting setup with the separate card decks as well as picking one card each month, that’ll definitely be in your hand. Historical progress mapped out interesting with strong DE barrages at first and FR „comeback“ later on. Furthermore, nice to see different scenarios.

Some really good and not so good elements. Really good: infantry blocks stand up or lie down, card mechanics, barrages, unlimited reinforcements cost 1VP each gameplay, realism. Not so good: VPs detached from map state as long as France does not collapse early. Most VPs from off board events for which a die roll is important to resolve. Need to know to gather precondition cards for those events. Realistic, so initial German push becomes trench warfare and lots of effort to capture one space. Very WWI
