Verdun: Steel Inferno (Kickstarter Edition)
60m - 240m
2 - 2 Players
Ages 14+
The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Beautiful game! Rating is preliminary as I have only played the intro scenario twice and loved it, but want to explore it lots more so it could easily increase to a 8 or a 9
Makhno1917
A relatively quick-playing dynamic game about the WW1 battle of Verdun in 1916 There are 2 short scenarios (2 turns each, about 1.5-2hours) and 1 full campaign (6 turns), with each turn consisting of 2 months (except turn 1 = 1 month only), and each month consisting of up to 7 rounds where German and French alternate playing cards (allowing several actions or triggering events). so both players are constantly involved, and it plays solo very well! The beautiful map is composed of zones, with highlighted features important for gameplay (such as hills, forts, victory locations)... the map is very nice but a bit too large for my taste. The units are wooden blocks that stand straight (fully healthy) or flat (exhausted), and there are trenches too (these can absorb hits) The rules are simple, and clear, but the game is deep, and very versatile with many strategies to explore... and, it seems, very though for the Germans to achieve victory! and... the "best" thing about this game, imho: the cards, and especially, the illustrations by Jacques Tardi in short: a great wargame, a fluid gaming experience, and a thing of beauty!
Dragonaris
A magnificent wargame that captures the WWI surroundings and simulates this great battle with historical accuracy. The components are of fine value and the card driven system assures replayability. The rules are few and straight forward and the booklet provides examples of play to clarify ambiguities. Although the rules are easy to grasp attaining your goal is a great ordeal. By mastering the use of the cards you will delve deeper into the game mechanics and reveal alternatives and options that will give your opponent a hard time. The innovative block system simplifies the units’ losses especially when trying to simulate a WWI wargame. It can easily be played solo and explore what-if situations. All these mechanics might seem abstract but give the true and historical nature of a WWI battlefield. This was really a nice surprise; backing the first game on a KS project from an unknown game company. They excelled themselves with this one. A hit in your wargaming collection.
