Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.

The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

I enjoy Calico and Cascadia, so I expected to feel the same about Verdant, but I was disappointed. I play almost strictly solo and found the solo rules incomplete - it took muddling through an entire game to figure out how to get thumb tokens (I finally found it buried in a paragraph under multiplayer.) Aside from that, the solo version felt like points were more dependent on luck than strategy and I generally do not enjoy luck-based games.

A mix of some of my favourite mechanism, including draft, set collection and spatial puzzle of the tile laying (or rather, card laying). Green thumbs help mitigate the luck of the draw, so the gameplay is a little bit more controlled than some others in the genre. Overall, the gameplay is a very pleasant experience that while relatively light, is also the right amount of crunchy. A very good design with a matching great look and production quality.

Every time I play this, I just think " I could be playing Cascadia". It just feels like there's too much setup, too many components, and not enough opportunity to make meaningful decisions.
